Mackenzie's founder, Tom Mackenzie, hired Doug Fiala in 1972 at the recommendation of Portland State University's H. Chik Erzurumlu. Experience gained over Doug's long career includes all phases of aluminum, reinforced concrete, steel, and timber structural design. He has expertise in structural glazing engineering and design including agricultural structures; heavy industrial building design and machinery layout; emissions stacks; light gauge steel structures and components including service stations and canopies; aluminum structures and components; sunrooms and overhead skylight structures. Doug provides a unique understanding of skylight systems and has custom designed hundreds of overhead skylights structures and glazed buildings for various manufacturers in California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington. He worked in conjunction with the City of Portland in developing acceptance criteria for testing overhead glass units and plexi-glass skylight systems.
Doug has 28 years of experience teaching engineering courses at Portland State University. In addition, he co-authored a nationally published paper in structural computer solutions.
"In my work, success is an efficient load path demonstrated by the use of common or unusual structural materials and elements."
